ASCS News

We are the ONLY private school to partner with

Regent University

with on-site dual enrollment course offerings for the new year!

ASCS is pleased to announce a partnership with Regent University to offer two college credit courses for the school year 2010-11:  Math for the Liberal Arts, and English Composition 101. The course will be taught at Atlantic Shores by our teachers, who will be adjunct Regent faculty members.

Students will enroll in Regent University and receive college credit upon successful completion of the course. The advantage that a student enjoys by taking a dual enrollment class is the fact that college and high school credits are earned upon the successful completion of the course (passing for colleges is a grade of “C” or higher).

Regent's Early College Program is specifically designed to allow qualified juniors and seniors at Atlantic Shores Christian School to take accredited college courses while still in high school. We are excited about this new multi-tiered partnership with Atlantic Shores, providing junior and senior students a cutting-edge, pre-college experience through a contract-delivered course option.

Seniors also have another new opportunity. We have partnered with both Regent University and Tidewater Community College for our seniors to take dual enrollment electives.

Metro Art News

On Friday, May 7, Atlantic Shores participated in the 2010 Metro Art Festival at Portsmouth Christian. We brought 22 entries that well-represented the gifts and talents of Shores artists. We not only served with our gifts, but with our time and energy by helping prepare and make the Festival a huge success. The Festival Coordinator made it very clear that it wouldn't have gone as smoothly without the attending
students! We would like to congratulate the following students on their great artistic achievements:

Middle School

keep up that creativity! Can’t wait to see what you come up for next
year’s competition!

Is it a Simile or a Cliche' — You be the JUDGE!

When a simile has been used a lot it becomes a cliche'. Recently our 4th graders studied the differences between a simile and a cliche' for a creative writing contest. These students were challenged to think of a creative way to say the same thing!

Here are a few examples that we thought were fun.

Cliche'
Paul is as busy as a bee.
Simile
Paul is as busy as an office man that has a ton of work. — Noah Zimmerman
Paul is as busy as a waitress with 80 tables. — Emily Birkler

Cliche'
The bread is as hard as a rock.
Simile
The bread is as hard as a hard back book. — Ashlyn Trueworthy
The bread is as tough as an ugly turtle. — Nigel McCalister

Cliche'
In the library I am as quiet as a mouse.
Simile
In the library I am as loud as an elephant. — Trevor Trevelle
In the library I am as quiet as the quietest person in the world. — Noah Zimmerman

Cliche'
My backpack was as light as a feather.
Simile
My backpack was as light as a pencil.— Ashlyn Trueworthy
My backpack was as light as a penny.— Emily Birkler

Cliche'
Alex was so tired that he slept like a log.
Simile
Alex was so tired that he slept like a person who has not slept in a year.
— Noah Zimmerman

Cliche'
Grandma's food was so good that I ate like a pig.

THERE IS NO AT ASCS!

Each year Atlantic Shores participates in the Association of Christian Schools International Creative Writing Festival.  The English department holds an in-school contest, and the teachers choose up to twelve entries to be sent to the district contest.   The results of this year’s contest are as follows:

POETRY

  • Amanda Bresnahan, Brittney Jones, and Olivia Stainback received a “good” rating – a white ribbon.
  • Caleb Bailey and Chang-Hee Lee received an “excellent” rating – a red ribbon.
  • Michael Ahlgrim, Heather Osborne, Lauren Pritchard, and Alex Cumbie received a “superior” rating – a blue ribbon:

SHORT STORY:  Zoe Sargent received a “superior” rating – a blue ribbon:

PERSONAL NARRATIVE:   Erin Matthews and Holly Webb received a “superior” rating - a blue ribbon:

Those who won a blue ribbon will have their work forwarded to the regional headquarters to be scored on the highest level.  If they also receive a superior rating at that level, their work will be published in an anthology. We should know the results of that evaluation in the early summer.

Congratulations AP Scholars!

2009 graduate Gloria McMillen, senior Anna McMillen and senior Alicia Ahlgrim have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the 2009 college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

Alicia Ahlgrim qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three AP Exams with a grade of 3 or higher.

Anna and Gloria McMillen qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more exams. Gloria earned a score of “passing” (three or above) on seven AP exams, and Anna has earned a passing score on eleven exams.
